Why You Keep Learning the Same Lesson Over and Over

Why You Keep Learning the Same Lesson Over and Over

Having the same realization five times doesn’t mean you failed the first four. That’s the idea Jon Vroman walks with in this episode: no studio, no script, no guest, just a trail near his house and a phone recording one continuous take, wind and footsteps left in on purpose. A week earlier he’d pulled out a bin holding 30 to 50 journals, most of them a quarter filled and abandoned, and started listening back through five to eight years of his own voice notes. What he found wasn’t new information. It was the same handful of realizations, showing up again and again, each time a little deeper.

The Bin of 30 to 50 Journals

Jon describes pulling out years of his own notes and hearing himself arrive at the same conclusions over and over, in different words, at different points in his life. Rather than treating that as a failure to learn, he reframes it as the nature of growth itself.

“It’s not about learning something new. It’s about remembering something true.”

Self-Reflection Is a Workout, Not a Graduation

The line Jon keeps coming back to on this walk: you don’t go to the gym once and stay strong. Realizing something true about yourself isn’t a one-time unlock. It’s a practice you return to, and forgetting it and rediscovering it isn’t a sign you weren’t paying attention the first time.

The Shame of “I Should Be Further Ahead”

Jon is honest about the other side of reviewing decades of his own notes: the shame that creeps in when you measure yourself against who you think you should already be, plus the sheer number of things a man is supposed to master at once. He doesn’t resolve that tension neatly. He names it, and moves through it toward something steadier.

Ten Years Back to Philadelphia

Front Row Dads turns ten in October 2026, back in Philadelphia where it started. Jon has watched men keep showing up for that entire run, journals and all, same lessons and all. His ask on this walk is simple: put your hand on your heart and thank yourself for showing up and doing the work, even the parts that felt like repeating yourself.

The Homework

A friend of Jon’s found one recurring pattern across 25 years of his own journals. Jon’s question for listeners is the same one he asked himself in the bin of old notebooks: what’s yours?

Jon reads every reply. Send your thoughts to team@frontrowdads.com, and if this one hit home, share it with another brother and start the conversation. More About Front Row Dads

Connect with us @ FrontRowDad.com & Instagram.

FRD is solving a huge problem for dads. Our culture has turned “Dad” into a joke. Go ahead, google Dad and you’ll find Dad Bod, Dad Jokes, Dad Weed, etc. Culturally, it’s a Homer Simpson mentality, and it’s BS.

Our community is built for solid men. Men with range. Those who are badass, and know there’s still more to learn, together.

Most guys find it hard to find “their crew.” Finding other committed men who are successful in life and want to put family first – these guys are rare. Is this you?

In FRD, hundreds of men from all over the world show up for each other, to share resources and raise the bar of fatherhood (our core values.)

If you’re reading this, you want to grow.  Podcasts are great, but guys, when you’re ready to stop just listening to content and want to JOIN the conversations, the FRD brotherhood is ready for you.
