Why You Keep Having the Same Fight w/ Mark Groves

Mark Groves calls it the dance. You get upset, she distances. Her distance makes you more upset. So you push harder, and she distances more. Neither of you is wrong, you’re both just doing the one thing the other one cannot handle.

The Dance You’re Both In

Groves explains it as a cycle built from childhood, carried straight into your marriage. One of you closes the distance and gets more intense when things feel unresolved. The other one distances and shuts down. Each side has a survival strategy, and each strategy feeds the other person’s exact vulnerability. Groves has a name for it.

“It’s called the vulnerability cycle.”

The One Sentence That Breaks Defensiveness

When you get defensive, you stop hearing what’s actually being said. Groves offers a single line that interrupts it: “I can see some truth in what you’re saying.” It’s not agreement, it’s just enough softening to stay in the conversation instead of hitting the ball back.

“Behind every criticism is actually a desired behavior. And behind every frustration we have in a relationship is an unmet emotional need.”

Your Defenses Live Beside Your Wounds

Groves ties the whole pattern back to something simpler: you can’t walk toward more connection without walking toward the thing that actually hurt you.

“Our defense strategies live beside our greatest wounds.”

Why You Might Need the Problem to Stay

In the second half of the conversation, Groves turns the mirror on himself. He admits that for years he stayed with a partner who was never fully certain about him, because the uncertainty matched something in him that needed solving.

“No one should ever be 100 with someone who’s 99.”

A Pattern Even a Podcast Host Admits To

Jon says something on this one he’s never said on the show before: that as the leader of a men’s group, he thinks he was unconsciously creating problems at home just so he’d have stories to bring to his own events.

More About Front Row Dads

Connect with us @ FrontRowDads.com & Instagram.

FRD is solving a huge problem for dads. Our culture has turned “Dad” into a joke. Go ahead, google Dad and you’ll find Dad Bod, Dad Jokes, Dad Weed, etc. Culturally, it’s a Homer Simpson mentality, and it’s BS.

Our community is built for solid men. Men with range. Those who are badass, and know there’s still more to learn, together. Most guys find it hard to find “their crew.” Finding other committed men who are successful in life and want to put family first. These guys are rare. Is this you? In FRD, hundreds of men from all over the world show up for each other, to share resources and raise the bar of fatherhood (our core values.) If you’re reading this, you want to grow.

Podcasts are great, but guys, when you’re ready to stop just listening to content and want to JOIN the conversations, the FRD brotherhood is ready for you. One more thing… Has this podcast helped you? If so, please tell us how we’re doing. Please take a minute and leave a review. Seriously, they matter. Apple PodcastsSpotify, or wherever you listen.
