5 Lessons That Made Dave Powders a Better Father (After 10 Years of Front Row Dads)

After a decade in the Front Row Dads brotherhood, member Dave Powders pulled out his notes and narrowed a ten-year education down to five lessons. They are short, practical, and none of them require a personality change, just a different calendar, a better question at bedtime, and a little more ownership of your own reactions. Here is the breakdown.

The five lessons Dave keeps coming back to

  • Your calendar reflects your priorities. From Adam Stock. Look at your week and it will tell you the truth about where your attention actually goes.
  • Take care of yourself first. From Jay Papasan. The Miracle Morning, sleep, meditation, and small habits compound into a better dad, not a more selfish one.
  • Run a Family Board Meeting. From Jim Sheils. A one-on-one day with each kid every 90 days, which might be the single most impactful thing you do as a parent.
  • Ask at night: “What was the best part of your day?” A simple question that helps kids go to sleep lighter and opens up conversations you didn’t know they needed to have.
  • You’re responsible for your reactions, not just your actions. From Adam Stock. The meditation practice that grew Dave’s EQ and changed how his own kids talk to each other.

Your calendar doesn’t lie

The first lesson is the one that quietly undoes the other four if you skip it. Dave’s take, borrowed from Adam Stock, is that you don’t need to ask yourself what you value. You need to look at your actual week. Wherever your hours went, that’s what you prioritized, regardless of what you’d say if someone asked you directly.

The question that ends the day right

Of the five, the bedtime question is the easiest to steal tonight. “What was the best part of your day?” does two things at once: it sends a kid to sleep on something good instead of whatever went wrong, and it opens a door to conversation that a flat “how was school” never does.

You own your reactions, not just your actions

The last lesson is the one Dave credits with changing how his own kids talk to each other. Most fathers already accept responsibility for what they do. Fewer stop to examine how they react, the tone, the sigh, the short temper at the end of a long day. Dave built an EQ practice out of exactly that distinction, and it shows up now in how his kids handle each other, not just how he handles them. More About Front Row Dads

Connect with us @ FrontRowDad.com & Instagram.

FRD is solving a huge problem for dads. Our culture has turned “Dad” into a joke. Go ahead, google Dad and you’ll find Dad Bod, Dad Jokes, Dad Weed, etc. Culturally, it’s a Homer Simpson mentality, and it’s BS.

Our community is built for solid men. Men with range. Those who are badass, and know there’s still more to learn, together.

Most guys find it hard to find “their crew.” Finding other committed men who are successful in life and want to put family first – these guys are rare. Is this you?

In FRD, hundreds of men from all over the world show up for each other, to share resources and raise the bar of fatherhood (our core values.)

If you’re reading this, you want to grow.  Podcasts are great, but guys, when you’re ready to stop just listening to content and want to JOIN the conversations, the FRD brotherhood is ready for you.

One more thing…

Has this podcast helped you? If so, please tell us how we’re doing. Please take a minute and leave a review. Seriously, they matter. Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen.
