How to Raise Unspoiled Kids: 3 Principles Every Dad Can Use

You raise unspoiled kids by modeling three things more than you lecture them: grace, gratitude, and generosity. Their opposites — pride, envy, and greed — are the warning signs. Kids catch your values from how you actually live with money, thanks, and giving, long before any talk sinks in. Here’s the fear almost no successful dad says out loud: the more you’re able to give your kids, the more you worry you’re quietly raising someone entitled. So how do you give your children a good life without spoiling them? In a Front Row Dads workshop, financial planners Andrew Lisi and Adam Stock of Next Level Planning Group laid out a framework that’s stuck with our members ever since. This is that teaching.

The 3 principles — grace, gratitude, generosity

Andrew builds the whole thing on three guiding principles, each with an opposite that signals trouble:
  • Grace (vs. pride)
  • Gratitude (vs. envy)
  • Generosity (vs. greed).
The key move is the order of your own life. In Andrew’s home, the rule is “give first, save second, and live off what’s left over” — or, as he puts it, “thank before you bank.” Kids don’t learn generosity from a lecture about it; they learn it from watching where the money goes first.

The 3 warning signs you’re raising a spoiled kid

The opposites are the tell. Pride shows up as “look at what I’ve done.” Envy shows up as constant comparison. Greed shows up when, in Andrew’s words, “a luxury once enjoyed becomes a necessity” — the new normal keeps ratcheting up and nothing is ever enough. These attitudes surface long before bad behavior does.

It starts with you, not the lecture

The uncomfortable core of the workshop: “It starts with us — our kids hear our words, but they see everything we do.” Adam, drawing on Ron Lieber’s book “The Opposite of Spoiled,” gets practical — chores vs. allowance, need vs. want, and teaching kids to earn and even invest so they understand how money actually works. But all of it rests on the same foundation: you can’t hand your kids a value you’re not living.

So, how do you raise unspoiled kids?

Pick one of the three — grace, gratitude, or generosity — and model it out loud this week. Let your kids see you give first. Say thanks before you spend. Own a mistake with grace instead of pride. As Andrew frames his whole role as a father: “I don’t own my kids — they’re entrusted to me.” Raising unspoiled kids isn’t about withholding the good life; it’s about showing them what to do with it.

More About Front Row Dads

Connect with us @ FrontRowDad.com & Instagram.

FRD is solving a huge problem for dads. Our culture has turned “Dad” into a joke. Go ahead, google Dad and you’ll find Dad Bod, Dad Jokes, Dad Weed, etc. Culturally, it’s a Homer Simpson mentality, and it’s BS.

Our community is built for solid men. Men with range. Those who are badass, and know there’s still more to learn, together.

Most guys find it hard to find “their crew.” Finding other committed men who are successful in life and want to put family first – these guys are rare. Is this you?

In FRD, hundreds of men from all over the world show up for each other, to share resources and raise the bar of fatherhood (our core values.)

If you’re reading this, you want to grow.  Podcasts are great, but guys, when you’re ready to stop just listening to content and want to JOIN the conversations, the FRD brotherhood is ready for you.

One more thing…

Has this podcast helped you? If so, please tell us how we’re doing. Please take a minute and leave a review. Seriously, they matter. Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen.
